the making of a pizza cookie

last year it was the burger cake for jashar's b-day. this year, pizza cookie! emily, jed & i spent the entire afternoon yesterday cutting out marshmellow pepperoni, onions, peppers and mushrooms....looks a bit like play doh pizza but nevertheless well worth it i'd say!
The Oedipus Cycle
A couple of weeks ago, The New Yorker sent me to see The Oedipus Cycle at the Pearl Theatre. I attempted some life drawing during the play, but the theater was too dark to draw anything coherent. Fortunately, there was time during the intermissions to sketch out thumbnails. It was a great show- I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

Cliffside Houses
The November backpage of Paper Magazine.. I snuck an Obama pin on the dress in the finish and they ended up crediting it in the printed version.. Paper's the best!

David Stone Martin

On my other blog (no, not that one... the other one), I'm always saying that "Today's Inspiration"- a blog about old school illustration- really lives up to it's name.
Check out their entries on David Stone Martin-
Modernism meets Traditionalism
Early Days
For the Record
"...unusual pictures, vitalized by many strange textures"
"Bending a wire"
His line quality is similar to Ben Shahn and Andy Warhol's illustrations.
Check out a full gallery of Martin's work here.

We want Plu-to! We want Plu-to!
I have very fond memories of watching this video when I was a kid. I had the one where the narrator was a magic mirror, this one is just a lame talking pumpkin but I think the videos are the same. When Pluto goes to cats court in part three is a classic.

A Wooly Welcome
Happy Monday Everyone and thank you for inviting me over!
I'm thrilled to be your friend and/or foe, as the case may be.
It seems I have some mighty catching up to do, and I sure do hope I don't disappoint.
In the meantime, it's getting chilly up here in the north country; here's a sweater from my sketchbook if you need it....

I look forward to playing in the sandbox with you!

Aijung Kim Interview

Hold Tight

So, I missed the opening reception to this GRNY show, but it sounds pretty awesome! Jordin Isip, Takashi Iwasaki, and Calef Brown among others are showing... but the biggest suprise was Jad Fair! I honestly didn't know he did art, but I'm certainly interested in seeing if it rivals his musical talents!
My floor doesn't really look like this...

ASCA Scool Counselor

This here project has been occupying me for a little over the last two weeks. So much fun, the ad, Monica Bussolati of Bussolati Design essentially let me do whatever I wanted with only minor changes which was AWESOME.
My apologies for the traitorous RISD logo, btw....I had all the colors mapped out and our ol' Pratt colors just didn't fit very sadly...I did manage to get Vassar in there for Jed though...
Check out my blog for the third image & some sketches!

French Fries to go...

A Paris gig that Brendan and I have been working all summer is taking place. He was listening to Bram Stoker's Dracula on tape when painting and as a result, it became the Crossing. When lunch time came around, I was tempted to make that enormous crocodile sandwich from Roald Dahl's Revolting Recipes with baguette as the body, boiled eggs for the eyes and artichokes for the scales, mmm...It didn't happen though, I'll save that for my kid's bento box someday. Okay, back to the show stuff, I made my very first hanging mobile and sure enough, difficult to balance the wires, big ups to the genius - Alexander Calder. For now, I want to share about a fine French: Isabelle Boinot. Her collages and drawings are full of flavor! In the gastronomical Paris, you can find her Super Cherie Zine and her features in Frederic Magazine at Un Regard Moderne. (this comic/book store is packed with treasures)

Safe For Now
Despite all the drama surrounding the economy going on right now, there in fact appears to be a silver lining!
"Lost in the House of Representatives' push to pass $700 billion bailout legislation is the so-called Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008.
Late Friday, the Senate passed the measure and sent it to the House, where it landed dead on arrival."
