Heroines of Sci-Fi!

Piece for Sarah Smith at Spectra Pulse about science fiction heroines. This one was pretty fun. Its nice to let my inner (and sometimes not so inner) nerd walk over a page sometimes. You'll notice my heroine actually quit smoking after the sketch stage of this piece, which was a really big step for her, and Im very proud.

btw, did you ink this thing TWICE?!

nope. I inked it in different colors to easily break it down and recolor and then added the watercolor background and photoshop-ed 'em together.

smart! great way to simplify and have more control!

sweet illo! who was the inspiration? ellen ripley?

the palette matures so much from the inks to the post-photoshop final. did you have a final color palette in mind or did it just evolve as you were working on it?

It was mostly inspired by Ripley. I wanted sort of a dirty/brawler type. As far as the palatte, it was definitely inspired by this salon I run by in Ridgewood. It's a very alien place. Kind of Miami on LSD.
